The
present miniature dates from 1680 and the technique is unequivocally
Peter Crosse. However, the gold cross symbol used as a signature
is extremely rare. Another example of this can be found on a miniature
by Crosse sold at Christie's on 15th June 1976, lot 111.
William
Frederick, Duke of Glucester & Edinburgh, presented thsi miniature
to Mrs Blackburne of Hale in 1806, when he was in command of the
northern district during the time of the riots in Lancashire.
